Clinical Laboratory Technologists, Clinical Laboratory Technicians

Clinical Laboratory Science Professionals evaluate test results, develop and modify procedures, and establish and monitor programs to ensure the accuracy of tests. Some clinical laboratory scientists supervise medical and clinical laboratory technicians. Laboratory scientists in small labs perform many types of tests, whereas those in large labs generally specialize.

Medical lab technicians (aka clinical lab technicians) usually have an associate's degree and are supervised by lab technologists. Medical lab technologists (aka clinical lab technologists or clinical laboratory scientists) have a bachelor's degree and are nationally certified.

Career opportunities for clinical laboratory professionals is excellent and will grow rapidly through the year 2016 as the continual advancement in medical knowldege hastens new testing methods and procedures as well as from advancements in bioengineering.

According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, medical lab technicians earned $32,120 in 2004. Medical lab technologists earned $46,600. Ranked in the BLS's top 15 healthcare careers for the future, medical laboratory jobs are expected to grow 15% between 2006 and 2016.

BS in Clinical Laboratory Science
This online program is designed for working professional Clinical Laboratory Technicians (CLTs) and Medical Laboratory Technicians (MLTs). Students will learn how to provide patient care by performing laboratory procedures that assist in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Topics include chemistry, microbiology, hematology, immunology, toxicology, blood banking, and molecular procedures, as well as how to utilize laboratory information computer systems to analyze and transmit patient data.
