Diagnostic Medical Sonography - Associate of Applied Science (Birmingham AL)
Students successfully trained in this associate degree program will be prepared to work in hospitals, outpatient clinics, or private practice. The areas of concentration will include ultrasound physics and instrumentation, along with abdominal, reproductive systems, obstetrical, superficial structures, and vascular scanning.

Students should understand the anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology of organ systems, recognize the sonographic characteristics of organs; learn the protocols for a logical and thorough survey of organ systems; and provide a diagnostic impression to the interpreting physician. Students will also learn to work effectively with other healthcare professionals to promote patient safety and quality patient care.

A unique feature of the program is a comprehensive externship (360 hours), which is necessary to provide the student with hands-on experience in the field of ultrasound. this practical experience will be completed under the mentorship of qualified sonographers and physicians.

Upon successful completion of this program, students should be able to accomplish the following:

  • Perform diagnostic ultrasound examinations with competency
  • Evaluate sonographic images
  • Explain the principles of how ultrasound machines function
  • Demonstrate the ability to successfully perform in a healthcare environment

Medical Billing and Coding - Diploma

The Medical Billing and Coding Diploma program is designed to serve those students who are interested in gaining access to entry-level positions in the medical field related to reimbursement procedures. Students will focus on the fundamentals of medical office protocol and specialized training in Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), International Classification of Diseases (ICD), and Healthcare Common Procedural Coding System (HCPCS). In addition to classroom experiences, this program includes hands-on learning as part of an externship.

Graduates of the Medical Billing and Coding program should be able to accomplish the following:

Respiratory Therapy - Associate of Applied Science Birmingham AL
The Associate of Science degree in Respiratory Therapy is designed to prepare students to provide oxygen therapy, assist with breathing, and support patients who are unable to breathe on their own. Therapists administer medications in aerosol form to help alleviate breathing problems and treat lung infections. They also teach breathing techniques to patients in rehabilitation centers and conduct asthma and smoking cessation programs.

Respiratory therapists follow specific, well-defined respiratory care procedures under the supervision of physician and/or other medical professionals. In addition, respiratory therapists provide home care to patients who cannot travel to a medical site by demonstrating the operation of ventilators and other life-support systems.

Graduates of the respiratory therapy program should be able to accomplish the following:

  • Describe the methodology utilized by the respiratory care practitioner
  • Articulate the fundamentals of respiratory care
